Default Detailed shadow map format

Is there any documentation around about the detailed sm file format?
Or alternatively a way to read/check/view the value at a given pixel and depth out of the file?
Thanks. Stefano

The detail shadow map file stores information as a collection of 'samples' rather than 'pixels' in a regular shadow map. It typically also stores more information than just 'depth' to support effects like transparent or colored shadows. This is the reason why common 2D image manipulation and storage implementations are not appropriate for this type of file. We do plan to add support for viewing and potentially converting detail shadow maps into regular pixel images to future mental ray image tools.

Just found this post and was curious if the status of the original request has changed?

"We do plan to add support for viewing and potentially converting detail shadow maps into regular pixel images to future mental ray image tools. "

has that happened?
thanks

Default detail shadow map files

The status has not changed as of today (July 2010), sorry about that.

What do you use detail shadow maps for, and what is most important to you:
  1. viewing a detail shadow map
  2. converting to a regular image/shadow map

Best, Steve.
