    Default iray quality and rendertime

    hey guys

i'm testing iray with maya 2012 and well, it works fine and stable maybe someone have an idea how i can reduce the gain in my images. i know that i can increase the samples, but maybe there is another way to get a good looking image with an acceptable rendertime. i think 4.5 hours rendertime are to much for full hd...

    here are some testrenderings:

testrender with 2000 samples and a rendertime of 7mins

testrender with 8000 samples and a rendertime of 4.5 hours

would be cool if you guys can tell me a few tips and tricks

Post iray tips and tricks ?

    Hi,

you wanna get faster renders with iray on the GPU ? Well, buy a better GPU, or plug another one into your system to speed it up

Seriously, iray is about to not use any tricks, like with traditional renderers. But of course, there are established shading effects, like bump mapping to fake structure, that are convenient to use, so iray supports them as good as possible. The same applies to idealized light sources, like point or directional lights, used to fake a sun light for example. Additionally, the lighting situations and material properties impact time of convergence of the simulation to a visually pleasing result, like a bright light with small size illuminating a room indirectly only through lots of bounces will take its time to capture all effects.

Not sure how your scene is set up, but avoiding small bright spots and prefer larger area lights for illumination should help to improve overall rendering speed. You may also have noticed that highly or perfectly reflecting surfaces converge faster to good quality.

Hey guys, thanks for the answers

tried the neatimage for photoshop and its amazing!

here is a new testrender with a pimped scene hope for some input.

just one prob is still there: the floor texture will not be repeated by iray i set the uv repeat to 30 in my mia-mat-x. when i render with mr it works perfectly.

UV repeat will not work for IRAY. You have to scale the UVs in the texture map editor. I don't believe that 3d projections are supported either.

uv repeat should work using mib_texture_remap but this requires you to use mib_texture_lookup instead of the maya file node.
