    Default Problem with dark result

Hi, i'm new to reality designer, server and 3ds max. I have created a simple scene in 3ds max and exported it with the reality designer plugin by using the multiview_ws template. The problem is, that the rendering result on the reality server is very dark and seems to have no color.

Maybe someone knows what to do to get the same result on the reality server like in 3ds max?

    Hi blazing,

First thing to double check is if the environment variable RD_HOME is set and is pointing to the top lever folder of the RD installation, i.e. the folder that contains the autodesk-max folder.

If the scene is still dark I need some more information about what shaders and light sources you use. Please use the Arch&Design material whenever possible together with photometric light sources for best results.

    Regards,
    Johan

thank you, by using arch&design materials and photometric light source the result on the reality server equals the rendering in 3ds max. After this i have tried to render two other simple scenes, one works very good but the other doesn't. In the not working scene i have just a simple box and a teapot with three photometric light sources and arch&design materials. By trying to render the scene on the reality server, the server renders for hours and gets no result ... here is the file: http://www.file-upload.net/download-...4/pot.max.html

Are there more rules to keep beside using arch&design and photometric light to get a working result from the reality designer with standard template?
I ask this because our use case will be, that we get scenes from external designers which we load on the reality server, manipulate little things, like positions and material of some scene-objects and render a picture from it. We dont want previously modify the scene to get proper results with the reality designer. But we can tell the designers which rules they have to keep by creating the scenes. So is this possible, or isn't the reality designer plugin stable enough for this use case?

    Hi blazing,

Great that it worked better when using Arch&Design and photometric lights. I just tried the pot.max scene and exported it with RD. On my machine it rendered fine i a couple of seconds using the bsp renderer and looked very similar to the original rendering so I am not sure what is going on there. I have a dual dual-core 64 bit machine, so it's not slow but by no means a monster either...

I definitely understand the need for proper guidelines of what works and what doesn't work. Some of these guidelines are in the release notes, but not in any clear way. I will see if we can put together some kind of document. In the meantime one other thing to have in mind other than using Arch&Design and photometric lights is to use regular max Bitmap maps for things like diffuse and bump and to rely only on uv-coordinates when positioning maps.

    Regards,
    Johan

Thank you again John! It seems that I haven choosen a wrong option on my tests, yesterday. After you said that scene renders correctly, I tried it again. Now it renders well in a very short amount of time with a very nice result. I don't know what my mistakes on the tests have been. I'm sorry for absorbing your time with non-existing errors.
