    Default mental ray Standalone 2011 and Houdini 10

    Anybody here knows if mental ray Standalone 2011 (3.8.1) works with Houdini 10?
    mental ray render node is supported according to the Houdini on line help.

    Default mental ray 3.8.1 vs 3.6 in Houdini 11

    I have updated to Houdini 11 and under Main Preferences/Rendering
    mental ray 3.6 is listed under Active Renderers. Is the current version of mental ray (3.8.1?) backwards compatible with version 3.6?

    mental ray typically retains backwards compatibility across versions. On the .mi scene file level compatibility is kept for a long time crossing several major versions. Using a 3.6 .mi file with mental ray 3.8 shouldn't be a problem. On the other hand, API and shader interface need to be touched in each version update to support new features. That means, shader binaries from previous versions are often not working in later versions of mental ray without recompiling.
