ok thanks for the info. Sounds promising but a bt of a hassle regarding third party shader support. We rely quite heavily on third party shaders so this might not be the best option for us.

Cool stuff, no doubt. Has anyone been able to try any of this for a project/rendering?

Recently I have done some experiments with Amazon EC2 and mental cloud direct.
The most important thing I discovered was the need to set up a complete BASH startup script for the AMI that downloads and installs all of your supporting files on each new instance when it boots.
