I might not understand the docs right, but I ran a Fine Displacement on an object with raytracing only and it was fine. (And 50% faster than with scanline, thanks for the tip.)

I render again with the Rasterizer and the result was horrible. I increased the shading samples and it still failed to triangulate the surface to anything but a few hundred triangles. It did create more triangles as the shading samples drove it up but not anywhere near enough. (The raytrace engine triangulated to a couple hundred thousand)

It's Maya 8.5 and the default Fine Displacement Preset for a NURBS Surface.
