From class yesterday, I was reminded about a non-intuitive interaction between FG and shadow trace depth. In particular, it concerns shadow trace depth and FG with secondary diffuse bounces checked on.
Make sure that your shadow trace depth is set to 1+ the total number of FG interactions allowed by FG trace depth. (Trace depth limits both FG reflection and refraction trace depth.)
It is 1+ because FG trace depth is actually the number of secondary FG rays.
By definition FG always shoots out primary FG rays.
